Young Girl overcomes vocal cord dysfunction to sing again
I’m not sure how long the link will stay good, but the story tells of a young lady, Samantha Trattner, who was told she would not be able to sing because of her VCD (which had originally been misdiagnosed as asthma). But speech pathologist Dr. Celia Santini at the Florida Hospital Sports Center and Rehab taught her simple breathing exercises and she was able to sing and win first place at a national songwriting competition.

Hello! So glad to find this blog!! I haven’t read thru it all yet, but I will! We thought my 7 year old son had exercise induced asthma. Of course, his symptoms only happen during soccer games. We started an inhaler 15 minutes before the game and then can repeat as needed. I can say that it has done nothing for his symptoms. He takes himself out of games before even finishing 1 quarter of play. He says he can’t breathe, wheezes and chest pain. Had him back to pediatrician today and after explaining that it only happens during the game and the fact that I think his emotions are bringing it on, she said she’s fairly confident he has vcd rather than asthma. She referred us to a pulmonary dr at childrens memorial. After doing some research I am pretty confident this is what he has! Anyway, wanted to say hi and that I will be reading your blog. How old is your son?

My son is 18 now; he was 13 when we figured out that he had VCD. Your son’s soccer experiences sound *extremely* familiar. I hope that when you have had time to his story, you will find it reassuring. He doesn’t play soccer anymore, but I can say that the VCD hasn’t troubled him in years.
